How to assess students' learning growth in innovative ways.

Non-traditional Assessment: Let's rap!
You can assess your students and still have fun doing so, even with distance learning! Here's an idea: have students create raps! It's modern, fun, engaging, and can still allow for you to assess your students!
Students can create raps about a historical figure.
For example: "Mary Anderson wasn't a teacher, a doctor, or a candy striper, but she did something great when she invented the windshield wiper!"
Students can create raps about their Science lessons, English lessons, Math lessons, and writing lessons too! Creating raps allows for students to show that they understand the content in a fun and creative way.

Non-traditional Assessment: WebQuests!

You can assess your students and still have fun doing so, even with distance learning! Here's an idea: have students complete a WebQuest! WebQuests are a fun and innovative way to assess students. Students will be using a 21st century skill to complete a WebQuest. Students work through content page by page and resource by resource until they come to the end where they complete a task.
Students can complete a WebQuest on The Industrial Revolution.
You can see an example on the Social Studies Assessment page on this website!
Working through a WebQuest allows for students to take control of their learning and then express what they have learned in fun, engaging, and innovative ways.

Non-traditional Assessment: KWL Charts!
The KWL chart is a great way to allow students to grow/expand upon their knowledge in a topic or subject. The students will fill out what they know (K) and what they want to know (W) before the topic is explored and learning has taken place. The students are able to focus their learning target and become invested in their objective. After learning the topic/ subject the student will fill in what they learned about the topic (L). The student can conclude their knowledge and reflect back on their growth. The extension for the KWL chart is adding an H for how do we know? The H column allows students to deeply comprehend how they can prove their learning and thinking/ practicing meta-cognition.

Non-traditional Assessment: KWL Charts!
Phil Collins wrote “In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” A perfect way for the learner to become a teacher is by creating a podcast! Instead of a student creating a presentation or writing a paper your student can record their voice on a podcast maker. Apps such as Podomatic or Podbean are great alternatives! You create a title for the topic being covered, record audio, and possibly add musical breaks between thoughts. This is a perfect way to present writing assignments, mathematical processes, social studies facts about historical periods, and more!
